This item is secured using a padlock (not supplied).  The prisoner's hands are put through each opening and the screw is then tightened.  The padlock is then applied making it impossible to unscrew the restraint.

Medieval in origin this handcuff is a very unusual. It is sort of a "thumbscrew" for the wrists. It seems that in the Bastille in Paris, certain cells were so deep that, at certain states of the tide, they flooded. Prisoners in them then were said to be having a bath bagne. There seems to have been a similar situation in some Italian prisons and the prisoners having the bath bagno in Italian were often wearing these . . thus the name bagno.
